So Serious Saturday #30

Fiction needs a basis in reality. Exercising non-fiction muscles once in a while benefits an active imagination, channeling creative energies as it focuses on a subject. So Serious Saturdays will be an active place for critical essays or writing about reality in the context of real events - even when it is not written on Saturdays.

The Kid-Dult

Comics, bright colors, and recreation are the latest trend in advertising and media. Is this just a fad, or will this preoccupation with eternal youth turn our culture into a worldwide playground for the rich?
Only a hundred years ago, children were dressed in miniature adult costumes and told to be seen and not heard.
Aristocratic children, that is – the poor were peasants who changed clothes once a year before their rags fell apart in the snow.     The 1950s saw a surge of teenage sub-culture, of poodle skirts and varsity jackets and class rings on chains. The world seemed carefree after the horrors of two world wars.
Fast forward to today, and we have grown adults playing with cartoon pocket monsters. Most Americans are in debt due to credit card purchases and slim bank accounts, a high cost of “keeping up with the Jonses” and a weird idea that if the minimum is raised that somehow the cost of goods and services will stay the same.
Every store carries superheroes and Pikachu, and no one has to dress tastefully to eat at a restaurant. Instead, grown men and women dress themselves in hanging or open peasant clothes and plastic toe platforms sadly called “flip-flops”, their eyes sagging and bloodshot under lotions and creams because of late night videochats and unplanned Netflix marathons.
If only we could have fun and be relaxed at the same time. However, while recreation is increasing so are stress levels. People essentially are rushing into lists of fun wants, whether they are mentally, physically, or financially ready for it.
Adults have disappeared from the modern world. We are whiny, needy, selfish babies who hardly work and work at play. Where’s the discipline? Where’s the self-control?
